The Email Tool That Lets a Small Shop Send Unlimited Emails and Automate Sales From $9 a Month

We compared 10 email platforms looking for the one that wouldn't punish a growing list. Here are the 3 that made the cut, ranked.

The short version

We compared ten email platforms for small product businesses and ranked the three that best balance list growth, sending limits, automation and price. Moosend came first because it combines unlimited sends with useful automation from $9 a month.

You've got a list. Maybe it's 300 people who signed up at a craft fair, 800 past customers from your shop, or a few hundred followers who said "let me know when you restock." You know those people are the most valuable thing your business owns. You know you should be emailing them.

And every time you sit down to pick an email tool, the same questions run through your head:

Is this going to cost me more every month as my list grows?

Will the free plan actually do what I need, or is it a trap?

Can I set this up once and have it sell for me, or am I signing up for another weekly job I won't keep up with?

We had exactly those questions. When we set out to find the email platform we'd recommend to the makers and small product sellers who read Brand Tool Guide, we expected it to take an afternoon. It took a lot longer, because we kept running into the same three problems.

Problem #1: The "free plan" kept shrinking under our feet

The first thing we did was what most small sellers do: look for something free.

That's where we hit the first wall. The free plans everyone recommends have been getting smaller. Mailchimp cut its free plan again in January 2026, to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, and automation isn't included anymore. MailerLite's free plan, which used to cover 1,000 subscribers, is now 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month.

Two hundred and fifty contacts. A single good market weekend can blow past that.

That's when it clicked for us: "free" wasn't really free. It was a countdown. The moment our list started working, we'd be pushed onto a paid plan anyway, and by then all our contacts, forms and templates would be locked into whichever tool we'd picked. So the real question wasn't "what's free?" It was "what will I happily pay for once my list is growing?"

Problem #2: The more we planned to email, the more it was going to cost

Next, we started pricing paid plans, and found the second trap hiding in the small print: send limits.

Many platforms don't just charge for the size of your list. They also limit how many emails you can send to it.

  • Mailchimp's Essentials plan ($13/month at 500 contacts) caps your monthly sends at a multiple of your contact count.
  • MailerLite's Comfort plan ($12/month) caps sends at 10ร— your subscriber tier. Unlimited sending needs Power, from $25/month.
  • Brevo goes further and charges by emails sent, not contacts. Starter begins at $9/month for 5,000 emails.

Think about what that means for a small shop. The weeks you most want to email are your launch week, your restock, Black Friday, the run-up to Christmas. Those are exactly the weeks a send cap starts biting. You'd be rationing emails at the moment they make you the most money.

We didn't want a tool that made us stop and do maths before hitting "send."

Problem #3: The emails that actually sell were locked behind bigger plans

This was the one that really frustrated us.

The emails that make money for a small product business, while you're busy making product, are the automatic ones: the welcome sequence that turns a new subscriber into a first order, the reminder when someone browses but doesn't buy, the thank-you that brings a customer back for a second purchase. You set them up once and they keep working.

And on platform after platform, that automation sat behind a more expensive plan:

  • GetResponse: Starter ($19/month) gives you one custom automation workflow. Unlimited workflows and abandoned-cart automation need Marketer, from $59/month.
  • Mailchimp: multi-step customer journeys need Standard, from $20/month.
  • Brevo: full automation needs Standard, from $18/month.
  • Constant Contact: one basic automation on Lite; more needs Standard at $35/month.
  • ActiveCampaign: full branching automation starts on Plus, from $59/month.

So the "cheap" entry price was really a price for sending newsletters by hand. If you wanted the tool to sell for you, the real price was double, triple, or more.

By this point we'd been through ten platforms. Most of them solved one of our three problems. Almost none of them solved all three at a price a small shop would actually pay.

The turning point: one tool that answered all three questions

Then we lined up the paid plans side by side at the list sizes most of our readers are at, somewhere between 500 and 1,000 contacts, and one tool stood out right away.

Moosend starts at $9/month for 500 contacts (about $7/month on annual billing), and here's what that $9 includes:

  • Unlimited email sends at every tier. No caps. Email your list on launch day, the day after and the day after that, and the bill doesn't change.
  • The full automation builder from the first plan, with 18 ready-made automation "recipes" (welcome series, re-engagement, product follow-ups and more) and behaviour-based triggers that most tools save for their pricier plans.
  • No feature ladder to climb. The thing that sells for you is available from day one.

That covered all three problems at once:

  1. The shrinking free plan? Moosend skips the free plan and gives you a 30-day free trial of the real product instead, so you can test the actual features before you pay anything.
  2. The send caps? Gone. Unlimited sends.
  3. The automation paywall? Gone. Full builder on the $9 plan.

That's why Moosend is our #1. Here's the full ranking.

๐Ÿฅ‡ #1: Moosend, Best Overall for Small Shops (9.4/10)

Best for: small businesses that want automation and unlimited sending at the lowest price, especially those selling through WooCommerce, WordPress or their own website.

CategoryScore
Value for money10 / 10
Automation9.5 / 10
Ease of use9 / 10
Features & room to grow9 / 10
Overall9.4 / 10

Why it's the clear winner

1. It's the cheapest way to get real automation. At $9/month you get a full automation builder. On GetResponse, unlimited automation workflows start at $59/month. On Mailchimp, multi-step journeys start at $20. For a small shop, that difference adds up to hundreds of dollars a year, and you're not giving anything up on the automation that matters most.

2. Unlimited sends means you never ration your best weeks. Every Moosend plan includes unlimited email sends. Your launch, your restock, your holiday rush: send as often as the moment deserves.

3. You don't start from a blank page. The 18 automation recipes give you proven starting points, like a welcome series or a "come back" campaign, so you're customising instead of building from scratch.

4. Some clever extras the others don't have. Moosend can trigger automations from on-site behaviour, and it even offers weather-based automation (handy if you sell anything seasonal).

5. It's backed by a big name. Moosend has been part of Constant Contact since June 2025, so it's not a fly-by-night tool you'll have to migrate away from in a year.

What to know before you sign up

We'd rather you go in with your eyes open:

  • No native Shopify integration. Shopify stores connect through Zapier or a similar tool. If you're on WooCommerce, WordPress or your own site, this doesn't affect you.
  • No free-forever plan. You get a 30-day trial instead.
  • No SMS, and A/B tests compare two versions at a time.
  • Transactional emails (like order receipts) aren't part of the standard Pro plan.

None of these touch the core reason most small sellers need an email tool: growing a list and turning it into repeat sales automatically. On that job, nothing else we compared gives you as much for the money.

๐Ÿฅˆ #2: GetResponse, Best All-in-One Suite for Growing Businesses (8.7/10)

Best for: businesses that expect to grow into a bigger marketing platform, want a native Shopify connection, or plan to use extras like webinars and a website builder down the line.

CategoryScore
Value for money7.5 / 10

GetResponse has been around since 1998, and it shows in the depth of the platform. It's the tool on this list with the most room to grow into:

  • Unlimited sends on Starter. Like Moosend, you're not rationing campaigns.
  • A native Shopify integration.
  • A broad suite on higher plans, including webinars and a website builder.
  • Powerful automation on Marketer, with unlimited workflows, advanced segmentation and abandoned-cart automation.
  • It gets competitive at scale. At 10,000 contacts, Starter is $79/month, a little cheaper than Moosend's $88.

Why it's #2 and not #1

For a small shop, the automation you actually need sits behind a bigger price tag. Starter ($19/month for 1,000 contacts, against Moosend's $16) includes just one custom automation workflow. Unlimited workflows and abandoned-cart automation need Marketer, from $59/month. Moosend gives you its full automation builder at $9. GetResponse is a brilliant platform to grow into, but most small sellers would be paying for a suite they won't use yet.

Pick GetResponse over Moosend if you're on Shopify, you want webinars or an all-in-one marketing suite, or you're already past 10,000 contacts and only need Starter's features. If you want automation that sells for you without the $59 price tag, Moosend is the better value.

๐Ÿฅ‰ #3: MailerLite, Easy and Friendly, Great for Digital Products (8.6/10)

Best for: Shopify sellers on a tight budget, people selling digital products, or anyone who wants a simple website builder in the same tool.

CategoryScore
Value for money8 / 10
Automation8.5 / 10
Ease of use9 / 10

MailerLite is a genuinely good tool, easy to use and popular with small businesses. It does a few things Moosend doesn't:

  • A native Shopify integration
  • A built-in website and blog builder
  • Digital product sales and paid newsletters
  • Multivariate testing
  • A free plan (250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month)

Why it's #3

It costs more for less sending. Comfort starts at $12/month with sends capped at 10ร— your subscriber tier. To get unlimited sends, which Moosend includes at $9, you need the Power plan from $25/month. For a small shop that emails often, that's nearly three times the price for the same freedom to send. It edges just behind GetResponse because GetResponse gives you unlimited sends from its first paid plan and far more room to grow.

Pick MailerLite over Moosend if you're on Shopify and want a native connection at a low price, or you sell digital products. Otherwise, Moosend gives you more sending for less money.

Our Verdict: Moosend Solved All Three Problems

Go back to the three questions you were asking at the start:

Is this going to cost me more as my list grows? With Moosend, your price depends only on your list size. Send as much as you like.

Is the free plan a trap? Skip it. Moosend's 30-day trial lets you test the real product with every feature switched on.

Can I set it up once and have it sell for me? Yes, from the $9 plan, with 18 ready-made recipes to start from.

GetResponse is a powerful suite to grow into, and MailerLite is a friendly pick for Shopify stores on a budget. But for most small product businesses that want to grow a list and turn it into repeat sales without the bill creeping up, Moosend is the clear winner.

Start with one automation, a simple welcome email for new subscribers. It's the email most likely to turn a sign-up into a first order, and once it's live it keeps working whether you're at the workbench, at a market or asleep.
